Jets move to Llanbedr to reduce noise at eisteddfod

THE RAF is to move a fleet of jets and helicopters to Llanbedr airfield to minimise disruption at the National Eisteddfod.

The RAF’s IV(R) Squadron and its fleet of Hawk T2 fast jet training aircraft and three Griffin HC1 training helicopters are normally based at RAF Valley - just a few miles from the village of Bodedern on Anglesey which will host the eisteddfod from 7 to 11 August.

The RAF said it “recognises that its activity could cause some noise during the Eisteddfod.”

“This is why RAF Valley is implementing a number of changes to its operations over the period of the event to minimise disruption,” a spokesperson said.

“One of these changes is to conduct some training at Llanbedr airfield during the period of 7 to 11 August.

“Hawk T2 aircraft will conduct circuit training during the day at Llanbedr – supported on the ground by RAF Air Traffic Controllers and Emergency services - together with personnel from Llanbedr airfield.”

RAF Valley Station Commander, Group Captain Nick Tucker-Lowe said: “We are extremely grateful to our colleagues at Llanbedr.

“It is vital that we continue with our mission to train front line fighter pilots, and by training at Llanbedr we can do this and support the Eisteddfod.”

RAF Valley plays a crucial role in UK Defence.

It trains fast jet aircrew, who then go on to secure the skies of the UK against potential aggressors and deliver military air power wherever it is needed by the UK Government.

It is also home to 202(R) Squadron - a helicopter unit that trains crews in search and rescue and mountain and maritime flying skills, and is the HQ of the RAF Mountain Rescue Service.
